In Laredo, a city in southern Texas on the Mexican border, best friends Silvia and Beba know that the long summer nights of their youth can’t last forever. Between bars, drive-thrus, friends’ couches, and borderlands, they confront the pressures of deportation, survival, and the future. But there is also time for poetry and dreams.

Silvia Del Carmen Castaños is a Boston-based filmmaker and urban planner, born and raised in Laredo, Texas. In 2018, Silvia’s short film “Ocean” won a jury prize at the Laredo International Media & Film Festival. Estefanía “Beba” Contreras is a musician, photographer, tattoo artist, and filmmaker who was born in Mexico and raised in Laredo, Texas. Her first feature film “Hummingbirds” is a collaborative self-portrait she made with Silvia Castaños, depicting their friendship and life experiences growing up in Laredo. “Hummingbirds” has been presented at Visions du Réel Works in Progress and CMP’s Great Chicago Pitch, among other venues.
